Meg was born and raised in a village about a day's walk from Newcastle, but felt that she could better make her fortune and find a husband if she were to seek employment in Newcastle. Her father, Philip Tacket, was the stableman of an inn, and therefore spoke a good word of her to her current employer in Newcastle. She does work at a tavern as a serving wench, and runs errands for the guests who stay at the inn.
Meg was raised in a quiet village, and finds that she is still quite shy about those things that go on in the big towns. Therefore, many things that are told to her, or that she sees, do cause her to blush. She also received quite a shock when she arrived in Newcastle, for she did find that she had a half-twin sister, named Ophelia. It was quite strange for her to find that she was not only a twin, but that her mother did not die in childbirth as she had been told, but had rather left her father for a sailor not two hours ere she was born.
Ophelia has offered to help Meg adjust to life in a large town, but Meg finds her quite wild. Therefore, Meg always tries to find convenient errands to run whenever Ophelia does come by to see her. Since Meg has arrived, Ophelia has changed her appearance so that their clothing might match, and Meg thinks Ophelia must be unright in the head to immitate her so.
However, Meg has met the most wonderful man, and they are now betrothed. He is a pikeman in the Fraternity of St. George, by the name of Gregory Hawthorn, and her father is quite pleased that she is to marry such a strapping young military man. Meg is pictured above on the day that the Queen of England did betroth she and Gregory before witnesses.
