Lewis Hawkins is a wealthy merchant, pompous ass, & assetter.  His claim to fame is uncle John Hawkins, ship builder and captain in her majesty's navy.  With Gwynnyth, (his pompous assette), they import alum from Venice for use as a dye mordant (which sets the dye into the cloth).  Because of the alum, they have a "backdoor" trade in restoring virginity, (as alum puckers things).  They also import miscellaneous luxury items.  However, their last ship is very overdue, so they truly are waiting for their ship to come in.
